    Minocqua

    "Minocqua area fishing report"

    September 24th 2007

Their have been alot of weather changes. In the respect of high skies following up with rain and clouds. But the temperature changes havent been to drastic. The winds have been out of the south and remained constant.Which have been working to the advantage of the anglers. That are willing to work the wind. Currents being created by the strong south wind have pushed the bait fish up along the wind ward shorelines. The shorelines have accumated slightly warmer water between 62-63 degrees vs 59-60 degrees out away from shore. This is causing stacking of bait fish and of the gamefish mostly smallmouth, musky, walleye and perch. They should be along rocky shorelines and weedy bays.

Largemouth Bass---Very good.Lots of fish on jig and worm combos aong any green weeds.Pitching Wooly Bugs 3 inch green pumpkin best in coontail clumps.Heavy rigs(plunkin) on texas rigging.Work the deeper weed edges for the larger fish.

Musky---Very Good---It's definitely Sucker time. Drift Smity Quick set rigs with blades and 10 to 13 inch suckers. Heavy wind are providing alot of hot action.Surface lure are still hot as the water temps are still holding at preturn over levels.(59-61 degrees)

Walleyes---Good---The mid week bite has been better with cloud cover. But the weekend bite was good with some fish very deep(40 feet). While other walleyes have been in shallower water 8 feet and less. Redtailed chubs have been good on 1/4 oz jigs over rocks. Also smaller chubs along shoreline structure to match small perch.

Smallmouth Bass---Good---Some very good fish showing up this weekend. Most of the fish found on deep humps.Try verticle jigging,drop-shotting.3 inch senko's and 3 inch power minnows.Caroline rigging with Chompersand Wollybugs. The fish responed better on overcast days.Check the base of humps on high pressure days.

Northern Pike--Good---Active on live bait.Jig Chubs out over deeper, shirter weeds in 14 to 20 feet.Larger largemouth are moving into this weed type with the pike also taking chubs.

Yellow Perch---Good on lakes but no reports from the flowages.Fish the wind blown weed edges with medium fatheads.Only about 4 to 7 feet of water.

Crappies---Some good reports from very early anglers (4am to 7am)Caught on tiny hair jigs along bridge pilings.

With water temps fairly constant. The fish can be patterned. But the Changes in the barometer changes the fish mood.Walleye bite very light on the high pressure days. Well fall colors will probably peak next week.Forecast of high of the 60's.Except on monday highs in the 80's.This should keep the water temps above the typical turn over temps 53 to 55 degrees.Though some lakes may have turned up north already like the manitowish area.

Surface temps have dropped some what. But not really what we would like. Most of the lakes are running about 58-61 degrees.A few reports of some of the lakes up north in manitowish waters and boulder junction are turning over.

Musky---Very Good-Best results have been working the weed flats and edges. Suckers on quick set rigs.Use the ones with the blades on windy days. They have been hot. With lots of multiple fish days. Also twich baits like Cranes & Slammers have been good. Rubberbaits (Bulldawgs,Suzy Suckers),Surface lures (Pacemakers Teasertails)and spinnerbaits are all getting good response.

Walleye---Very Good-With water temps still hanging above turn over. Don't over look the weed edges at times. Some anglers still catching nice fish around 15 to 18 inches. Use leeches along 8-12 feet weed edges. Bulk of the action taking place off shore humps. Using 1/4oz jigs in 26-40 feet of water. Then on couldy days work the higher up humps.

Largemouth Bass---Pretty good action-Work the weeds and some shallower wood as of right now. Jig and worm combo. Plus jig and woolybugs are also producing.

Smallmouth---Fair-Not a lot of reports. Most guys are still working the deep humps and picking up some nice fish. Woolybugs, senkos are still producing. Drop-shoting is working the best as of right now.

Well kind of a short report I was out of town for a few days. If more reports come in.I'll post another report later.

Summer like temps have driven surface tempertures up intp the middle 60's. The highest I seen over the weekend was 65 degrees. Also a lot of rain has brought water levels up on most of our lakes. The flowages have rasied up a foot or more. Some lakes are all most back to full.

Musky---Very Good---With the warm temps a varity of lures are working. Bucktails,Twitch,Gliders and Rubber baits. Most action has been shallow weed related. From 6-8 feet to 12-14 feet weed edges. Very good numbers and good size fish up to 47 inches were reported this weekend. It almost felt to hot to fish musky. While some lakes didn't respond as good as others. But alot of good reports of multi fish days.

Walleye---Very good---The key has been to look shallow. Most deep bites have stopped as the walleyes migrated back to the weeds and shallow wood. Redtails have been good in the wood. While fatheads and leeches have worked the best in the weeds.Even reports of walleyes grabbing rattle traps type of lures of 6-8 weeds.

Northern Pike--Good--Fish are active in 6-10 feet in the weeds. Spinnerbaits,Husky jerks are working good. Also lots of reports from musky anglers picking up pike on Bucktails and jerkbaits. Also live batis is also producing.

Crappies---Very Good---Shallow wood and weeds in 4-8 feet of water. Most of the angers are using Slip-bobber rigs with medium fatheads. Some anglers are casting small twister tails on jigs. Number 0 and 1 mepps are also caught slabs up to 13 inches.

Yellow Perch---Good---Again with the weeds.Medium fats and medium leeches.

Smallmouth Bass---A few anglers reporting fish deep about 30 feet. Most of the are on Lake Tom.

Largemouth---3-5 feet in the weeds or in wood using 3 inch Twister Tails on the Minocqua Chain.

No Bluegill reports as of this weekend.Sorry.

Well the forecast is for cold weather coming in.Highs of 42 by the middle of the week. After 82 on sunday. This cold weather coming in should make the musky bite better. Really should turn on the Sucker bite. The drop in water temp should push the waleyes back out to the deep water. With such high temps and a late turn over again. The turn over should start to show up by this time next week if the cold weather stays.

Cold weather has arrived!!! Morning temps of 27--31 degrees has dropped surface temps rapidly. Most lakes are running about 53-55 degrees. The flowages are at 47-50 degrees.

Musky---Very Good---The cold temps have the fish reacting good to suckers.Twitch baits, jerkbaits and gliders are also producing. There has been nice fish caught in the low 40" range. Last week's high winds and the weekends high pressure made things tough. But things should start picking up this week.

Walleye---Very Good---Walleyes have been reacting good to the cold. But mid week boat control was tough because of the high winds. Redtailed chubs have been working good on the flowages. For fish feeding on perch, gills and bullheads. Deep water jigging has picked back up.

Largemouth Bass---Fair---Not many anglers pursuring these fish. But these fish are still biting well.

Crappies---Good to fair---High winds and high pressure hurt the bite. But the late mornings have been the best for these fish.

Forcast for rain through friday. But it should be good for anglers willing to brave the weather.

    FISHING REPORT by Jeff Winters

Posted by Jeff's Guide Service in Untagged

Well another unseasonable cold snap is upon us.  The weather this summer borders on the ridiculous.  Fortunately there have been some good things associated with this past cold front.  While walleye activity has slowed a little bit recently, there have been some pretty good smallmouth bass, perch and crappie bites.  The best thing is the MUSKIES have rampaged the past two days.  We are entering fall patterns on musky.  Look for an early start to sucker time.  We've been having good success on large bucktails rolled slowly over the weed tops and rubber baits.  The rubber baits have been particularly deadly. There's also been some action taking place on small suckers hung over the side of the boat.  We've been finding fish in and around heavy weed cover and not particularly deep - 8 to 15 feet has been a good depth for me.

If life continues down this cold path, look for transition to start taking place rather quickly when it comes to walleye fishing.  I've already been taking some minnows on a couple of the lakes I've been fishing and have been enjoying some success.  Just as with the muskies, walleyes are relating soley to weed cover at the moment.  On dark water --   4 to 6 feet; and on clear water - 15 to 20 foot works best.  Jigs and crawlers are still holding as the top bait at this moment.

Crappies and perch have also been hanging around weeds.  I've been finding them on area flowages in fairly shallow water - 2 to 5 feet.  Jigs tipped with crawlers or fatheads are both working pretty good on these types of fish.

That's it for now.  Gotta Run.  Jeff Winters   www.jeffsguideservice.com
