    Wausau & Mosinee Area

Current Outdoor Report from Hooksetters Guiding Services

    September 30, 2007

Fall like conditions mean BIG fish turn-on.

Muskies are tearing it up.Jerkbaits and crankbaits are coming into their own right now.Look for areas with rock and or deep wood as these are going to be your main target for the next few weeks as the muskies get ready for winter.

The walleye bite is fantastic. We are targeting deep water humps in 20 feet of water that top off at anywhere from 8 to 15 feet. Work on top of the humps and down the sides to determine the appropriate depth for "the day" also look fort he wind ward side to be the most effective as the walleyes will stack up waiting for incoming prey.

If you want crappies NOW is the time to start targeting them. Deep submerged wood in 10 to 16 feet of water will be holding a fair amount of fish right now.Simply locate an area holding fish type structure and work it with slip bobbers set to the appropriate depth. This can be anywhere form 12 to 36 inches off of the bottom.Use small jigs tipped with crappies sized minnows for best results.

The bass bite is going strong. If you can locate holding areas usually current breaks with submerged wood you will find yourself a hotspot.I look for wood in 4 to 12 feet of water surrounded by a sharp current break preferably an edge. Work these areas thoroughly with jig and minnow combinations or crankbaits like Rapala Shad Raps or Cisco Kids in firetiger or orange tiger.

Hunting season is going strong and guys are bringing in numbers of nice deer. With as many deer coming in one sometimes forgets to use caution when handling animals taken in the wild. Lymes disease is something that is very real and just a little note of caution... Remember to wear proper gloves when cleaning or gutting out your deer to prevent the possibility of contracting lymes disease.

Another quick note trapping season is right around the corner and this is a good time to get your trapping equipment prepared.Traps old and new need to be dyed. Trap tags need to be installed Wires wound. and most of all set locations need to be found. This is a great time to do your pre-season scouting for your trapping locations. Don't be the guy or gal who waits until opening day to find set locations and then run out of daylight while trying to get set up.

    Fantastic Fall Fishing is NOW...

The musky bite is going strong. Big soft plastics like Delong Flying Witches and Killer Eels, and large jerkbaits like Suicks and Ducktails Weed Warriors are providing all kinds of action. Work shallow rocky areas early and move on towards remaining deeper weed edges as the day progresses. One other bait that is coming into it's own right now is the use of live bait. Suckers rigged on a quick set rig at this time of the year will produce a fair amount of fish. Sometimes when artificial just won't cut it running live bait can save your day.

The walleye bite continues to get better and better. We are catching a lot of fish in the 15 to 20 inch range by working 4 to 8 feet of water early and then moving to the deeper holes towards the middle of the day. A simple jig and minnow is all you need and depending on the depth a 1/8th to 1/4 ounce jig should be all you need.

The crappie bite is holding strong Actually the best crappie bite hat I have seen in years. Limits of crappies are being taken daily by working the submerged timber in 6 to 10 feet of water. Run small 1/16th ounce jigs tipped with minnows or small plastics right down in the wood and get ready to YANK them out.

As far as the rest of the species: catfish, bluegills, and pike, we are seeing quite a few of them as well but with the bite going so strong on the other species right now it is hard to veer away. But we are picking up some dandy pike and catfish while targeting musky and walleyes. In addition to that we are also seeing a few jumbo perch and some bull gills while targeting the crappies.

The 2007 Wisconsin Deer hunt is well under way and guys are bringing in some very nice whitetails. With all of the people in the woods these days it is always important to remember safety first. Look before you shoot. It only takes a second.
