Unalaska Iland sits about 800 miles southwest of Anchorage in the Aleutian Ilands but anglers make the long trip just for the halibut. Running out of Dutch Harbor Jack Tragis landed the world-record Pacific Halibut at 459 pounds in 1996. Pulling such monstrous flatfish up from 50 - 300 feet takes some brute strengthe but the effort is well rewards with loads of cold water halibut fillets. Drop fresh natural baits or heavy jigs on the bottom of the Pacific and you'll be well rewarded. July and August are the best months but people catch halibut May 15- September 15th.
